10 Places to Get Family Medical Advice Online

Friday, February 25th, 2011

It’s 5 o’clock on Sunday night and your daughter is complaining of an earache.  How do you find out what to do?  What if it’s not that cut and dried?  Your son is complaining of pains in his back.  What’s causing it?  Is it serious?  Do you need to take him to the hospital or give him some pain medicine?  Check out these 10 places to get family medical advice online.

  1. Health.justanswer.com: Actual doctors are answering questions on this website.  When you pull up the site it will tell you what the wait time is for an answer to your medical question.  When I checked it late afternoon the wait time was only 7 minutes.
  2. Tools.aolhealth.com/symptoms: Sometimes you don’t know where to start when looking up what’s wrong with you or a family member.  This site is great for that because you can either look through a list of symptoms or just enter your symptoms and it will give you an idea of what might be wrong with you.
  3. Healthmanager.mayoclinic.com: You can get online advice about health concerns from this website.  The Mayo Clinic is a recognizable and respected name in medicine to set your mind at ease.  This site does require that you create a login to proceed.  This site helps you organize all of your medical information.
  4. Healthline.com: Symptom searches or information about a chronic condition are just two of the main searches you can do on this website.  There is even a list of specialists if you are in need of one.  Other medical news and break throughs are noted on this site as well if you want to know the latest discoveries.
  5. Webmd.com: If you have a Web MD place near you I’m sure you’ve heard the commercials about checking in over the computer and then they call you when it’s time for you to come in for your appointment so there’s no more waiting room.  This site also has a plethora of information about common ailments and even has tools for weight loss.
  6. Justaskmedical.com: Medical staff is on duty 24/7 to answer your questions.  They guarantee that you will get an answer to your question in 24 hours.  You will have to create an account for this site, but questions are answered for free.
  7. Pediatrics.about.com: As the name suggests this site is focused more on children and their ailments.  Concerns about immunizations or other common childhood infections are detailed on this site so that you can educate yourself and make informed decisions about your child’s medical care.
  8. NHS.UK/self-assessment-tools.com: Many illnesses can be self-diagnosed.  Check your symptoms on this site and follow the advice.  There is a phone number to call if you do not find your symptoms or need further assistance, but it is a UK number.
  9. Livestrong.com/medical-advice: While this site is not set up like the others I did find some very useful videos for various ailments and treatments.  There are many times when you need to be shown something and so this site might provide the information you need.
  10. Televets.com: Let’s not forget that our pets are part of our family.  Check out this site for advice about what’s going on with your pet.  Just like some of the websites for people this site allows you to ask your questions of an online vet and get your answer right away.

10 Tips for Selecting an Internet Service Provider

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Are you just striking out on your own, moving to a new area or did your grandkids finally talk you into getting on the internet? Now you’re in the position of having to choose an internet service provider or what is known as an ISP. Where do you start?

  1. What’s available in your area – The first thing you need to find out is what is available in your area. If you live in a rural area with a small population, you may not have any choice at all. Start with your local phone company (for dial-up or DSL) and cable television providers and go from there. Wireless broadband may also be available whether you live in a rural or urban area.
  2. Get advice – Make sure you ask your friends and neighbors for advice. They may already know what’s available in your area and have valuable information from past experience. They’ll be sure to tell you about any customer service problems they’ve had.
  3. Dial-up or high speed – Unless you have a lot of extra time on your hands and are very patient, dial-up won’t even be an option. Even opening an email can take several minutes to load, so most people need high speed. Someone once told me that if he was forced to use dial-up he would have to slit his wrists and sit in a hot tub. I suspect dial-up will soon be obsolete.
  4. Compare prices – Once you find out what’s available, your next step is to compare prices. Unless money is no object, you’ll want to get the best service to fit your needs at the lowest price. Be sure to compare the speeds available for each price range and check for any hidden costs. Generally the satellite or wireless broadband will be more expensive than DSL or cable.
  5. Customer service – The price may be a secondary issue if you get lousy service. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Some of the smaller providers may charge more but should want to work harder to keep you as a customer. Larger providers may be part of a huge conglomerate and treat you as just another account instead of using a more personal approach. Call their support line (not the sales number) and see if you get a real person or an automated answering system.
  6. Speed – There are different speeds available, so the one you choose will depend on your anticipated usage. For checking email and occasional web surfing, you can get by with a lower, basic level. If you’re running a small business or need quick internet access, the time savings of a higher speed level may be worth the extra cost.
  7. Portability – If you do a lot of traveling with a laptop or other portable computer, you’ll want to know if your ISP will travel with you. A provider with nationwide access and provides POP3, SMTP, and Webmail services will be important.
  8. Security – Be sure to check the provider’s privacy policy and security. You’ll want to know what information is collected about you and how it is used. You also want to find out if this information can be accessed by others inside or outside the company.
  9. Contracts – When comparing prices, watch out for providers that offer a discount for signing a long term contract. Things change quickly in the computer business, so prices and companies change with them. If your circumstances change, you will want the flexibility to change your ISP as needed.
  10. Package deals – If you’re getting your internet access from the local broadband, cable or telephone company, they may offer a package price for several services. Instead of paying separately for TV, telephone and internet, everything is conveniently on one bill. Make sure this option is really going to save you money by providing the same amount of service you’re currently getting at a lower overall price. Also, be wary of long term contracts.

Whether you’re a novice or fairly techno-savvy, choosing an ISP can be confusing and frustrating. Be sure to take your time and carefully weigh all your options before making your final selection.
